Remove, mark closed, or request removal: what is the difference?
Google gives you three separate actions, and each one changes something different.
- Remove the profile from your account. This takes all owners and managers off the profile. Per Google Business Profile Help, any posts, photos, videos, and review replies by owners and managers are permanently removed and can't be recovered. User-generated content and reviews remain, and the business might still show on Search and Maps unless Google considers it ineligible.
- Mark the business as permanently closed. This is a switch inside the removal flow. Google says a business marked closed won't disappear from Maps right away. It slowly disappears from search results and is then completely removed.
- Request removal from Search and Maps. Google Business Profile Help says you can request this even if you don't own the profile, but a business is removed only if it never existed or isn't eligible to be on Google.
If you only want to stop managing the profile and the business keeps running, there is a fourth route: transfer primary ownership, or remove yourself from the profile. Google says removing your account this way doesn't affect the profile's current content.
How to remove a Google Business Profile from your account (step by step)
Sign in as the primary owner
Only primary owners can remove profile content and managers. If you were added as an owner or manager recently, Google makes you wait 7 days before you can remove content or managers.
Open Business Profile settings
Go to your Business Profile while signed in to the Google account associated with it. Select More, then Business Profile settings.
Choose Remove Business Profile
Select Remove Business Profile, then Remove profile content and managers. If the business has closed, turn on Mark your business as permanently closed on this screen.
Confirm and finish
Select Continue, then Remove, then Done. To remove several profiles at once, open the Business Profile Manager, select the profiles, then choose Actions, Remove businesses, Remove. If that returns an error, remove content and managers for each profile separately.
Know what stays behind
Customer reviews and other user content remain on Google. The business might still show on Search and Maps unless Google considers it ineligible. To manage the profile again, you must re-verify it.
How to remove a business from Google Maps you do not own
If a listing on Maps is for a business that never existed or isn't eligible to be on Google, you can request its removal without owning the profile. Google Business Profile Help lists the steps: sign in to your Google Account, open Google Maps or the Maps app, select the business, click Suggest an edit, then Place is closed or not here. Pick the option that fits, such as "Doesn't exist here" or "Offensive, harmful, or misleading," and click Submit. Google might email you with follow-up questions. If the request is approved, the business is removed from Search and Maps.
If the business is real but its name, phone number, or website is wrong or fraudulent, use the business redressal complaint form instead. That reports a violation; it is not a removal request.
A removal request about a real, eligible business, such as a competitor, will not get it taken down. Google removes a business only if it never existed or isn't eligible.
Removed vs closed vs Maps removal: quick comparison
| Action | Who can do it | Reviews kept? | Listing disappears from Maps? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove profile content and managers | Primary owner | Customer reviews stay; owner replies are deleted | Not guaranteed; it may still show |
| Remove and mark permanently closed | Primary owner | Customer reviews stay; owner replies are deleted | Slowly, then completely removed |
| Request removal from Search and Maps | Anyone signed in to a Google Account | Not applicable | Only if Google approves the request |
| Transfer primary ownership | Primary owner | Yes, current content is unaffected | No, the profile stays up |

Situations where deleting is the wrong move
You have a duplicate listing
Don't remove your main profile to fix a duplicate. Google's guidelines say there should be one profile per business. If both profiles are in your account, run the removal steps on the duplicate only. If you don't control the duplicate, follow Google's help article on resolving duplicate profiles and ownership issues.
You sold the business
Transfer primary ownership to the buyer instead. Google says removing your account this way doesn't affect the profile's current content, so posts, photos, and review replies stay in place.
You are closed for a season
Keep the profile. Removal permanently deletes your posts, photos, videos, and review replies, and you would have to re-verify before you could manage the profile again.
Someone else controls your business's listing
Use Google's request ownership process. A removal request only succeeds if the business never existed or is ineligible, which a real, operating business is not.
You are rebranding
Edit the existing profile. Google's guidelines say your name should reflect the real-world name used on your storefront, website, and stationery, so change it to match the new signage.
Three checks before you remove anything
Removal does not mean the listing disappears. Google says removing all ownership and content doesn't guarantee the business won't show up on Maps and Search. If it stays up, no one can manage it, so no one can reply to reviews or correct its details.
Confirm your role. Only primary owners can remove content and managers, and new owners and managers wait 7 days. If you are a manager, the primary owner has to do it, or you can remove yourself from the profile.
There is no undo. Google states removal is permanent, affects all owners and managers, and the removed content can't be recovered. To manage the business again you must re-verify, and your old posts, photos, and replies will not come back.
