How to find the best local SEO agency for your business

The best local SEO agency for a business is the one that can show, before you sign, what it will do in the first 30 days, how it will measure calls and visits rather than just rankings, and that you keep ownership of your Google Business Profile. Local SEO agencies charge about $1,557 a month on average (Ahrefs survey). Rankure is one of them, so we score ourselves on the same 12 checks below.

  • Prices published$599 to $2,196 a month
  • Month-to-month30 days written notice
  • You own your profileManager access only

If this sounds familiar, the scorecard is for you

  1. 1

Three proposals, all promising page one

And no way to tell which one is telling the truth.

  2. 2

A monthly report full of rankings, and the phone is quiet

Rankings for terms nobody searches look good in a report and pay for nothing.

  3. 3

You cannot say what the agency did last month

Work you cannot see is work you cannot judge.

  4. 4

A 12-month contract you cannot get out of

Signed before anyone had proved anything.

Why most “best local SEO agency” lists will not help you choose

Search “best local SEO agency” and many of the results are lists written by agencies, often with the author’s own agency near the top, or directories where some positions are sponsored. Neither tells you which agency fits a roofer in one town or a dental practice with two locations.

“Best” depends on what you need fixed. A business with a suspended Google profile needs a different agency than one with a healthy profile and no reviews. So instead of a ranking, here are the checks that separate agencies that move calls from agencies that move reports. You can apply them to any proposal in about ten minutes.

What a good local SEO agency costs

Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers. These are the figures that matter for a local business.

Six questions to ask on the first call

Ask the same six to every agency. The answers sort them faster than any proposal deck.

  1. 1

“What would you change on my Google profile this week?”

A good agency has already looked and can name two or three things. A vague answer means they have not looked.

  2. 2

“How will I know it is working before rankings move?”

You want early signals: profile views, calls, direction requests, indexed pages.

  3. 3

“Can I speak to a current client in a business like mine?”

Not a testimonial page. A person.

  4. 4

“What happens to my listings and pages if I leave?”

    They should stay yours.

  5. 5

“Who writes the content, and do I approve it?”

You should see every page before it goes live.

  6. 6

    “What will you not do?”

Agencies that say no to review schemes and guarantees are the ones still standing in a year.

Choosing a local SEO agency: quick answers

What makes a local SEO agency the best?
The best local SEO agency for you shows in writing what it will do in the first 30 days, measures calls and visits rather than rankings alone, leaves you as owner of your Google Business Profile, publishes its price and does not lock you into a long contract.
How much should I pay for local SEO?
Ahrefs’ survey of SEO providers found local businesses pay about $1,557 a month on average. Rankure charges $599, $1,094 or $2,196 a month for one US location, month-to-month.
Can a local SEO agency guarantee first place on Google Maps?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. An agency that guarantees a position is guessing or using tactics that risk a suspension.
How long before local SEO shows results?
Profile fixes can show in calls and direction requests within weeks. Ranking gains in competitive areas usually take several months. Ask any agency what you should see at 30, 60 and 90 days.
Should I hire a local agency in my own city?
Not necessarily. What matters is whether they know your type of business and can show results for it. A good remote agency asks a lot of questions about your town.
How do I compare SEO proposals?
Put each through the same checks: first-30-days plan, measurement, ownership, price, contract and proof. Our guide on how to compare SEO providers goes deeper on reading audits and reports.
